Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park

It’s beautiful, this power that could take us.
Between ocean tides lapping our feet and mountains looming overhead,
this space moves and changes with nature’s force.
Elemental spirits weave through sky, mountain, and ocean,
foreshadowing weather. While volcanic plumes remind us of the making and remaking of the ground we stand on.

TIME & PLACE is an ongoing project exploring our relationship to landscape, place and the elemental forces that shape the world around us.

The project began with our 2024 TIME & PLACE exhibition with Megan Dickinson Gallery at the Aotearoa Art Fair, exploring the powerful landscapes of Aotearoa. Time & Place

Our 2026 residency at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park expands this project by exploring the connections between the volcanic landscapes of Aotearoa and Japan. Both countries sit along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where volcanic and seismic forces are continually shaping and transforming the landscape.

This shared geological context provides a foundation for considering landscape not as something fixed or permanent, but as something continually formed, fractured and renewed by elemental forces. Mountains, coastlines, forests and volcanic terrain carry traces of both deep geological time and ongoing change.

The residency will respond to the local landscape, environment, weather events and creatures, while developing our body of work with Shigaraki clay and Japanese ceramic pigments, further connecting the work to the place in which it is made, reflecting the shifting relationship between time, place, material and the forces of nature.
